What made you want to draw this? Is this spirit form any specific mythology?

I tend to paint lots of seascapes, waves and underwater scenes (because I love the ocean and surfing and diving), so I wanted to try a different style and composition from my usual stuff. I wanted to paint an abstract piece but not something obscure; my goal was to make an abstraction of something viewers would recognize without any realism. I decided to paint a stallion because it is a majestic creature often associated with a "wild and free spirit" and also because I was living in Louisville (home of the Kentucky Derby and a large equine culture) where I knew this painting would appeal to a variety of potential buyers/collectors (I sold the original in Louisville, where it now hangs in the office of a stock-trader and can be seen in the background of his online meetings). I utilized the earth-tone palette mostly because it was most likely to match the decor of the demographic likely to purchase the artwork, and I made the surface highly textured to resemble stone. The style is somewhat influenced by cubism but also feature flowing lines to embody the movement of a galloping steed.

Wow, that's gorgeous. Movement is communicated very clearly. I love the way you used so many colors but kept the feeling of a limited palette. It reminds me a little of Boccioni...

This is very lovely, indeed. It reminds me of a painting we recently did in art class where we used three colors that were side by side on the color wheel, I chose blue, blue-violet, & violet. We were assigned to choose an animal and draw it. Next we drew lines across the paper, connecting to a point on the opposite side. We painted the colors we chose in the shapes to make the animal camouflaged into the painting, but we had to make sure the animal was visible as well. If you were aiming for something along those lines, you've done a great job, this is clearly a running horse.
